Trimming Small Dogs’ Nails

Trimming small dogs’ nails is just as important as trimming larger ones.  All dogs need their nails trimmed regularly, and this is especially so for smaller dogs since they tend not to get as much wear on their nails as larger dogs.

Small dogs often get carried around and frequently spend less active time outdoors. So if you find your little toy dog’s nails are growing at an alarming rate, you need to get into the routine of regular nail trimming.

You Can Use Any Nail Trimming Tool You Like

Small dogs’ nails can be trimmed with any of the available types of dog nail trimmers; dog nail scissors, pliers style clippers, guillotine clippers, a dog nail grinder, or a dog nail file. Just make sure you get a trimmer of the right size. An over-sized nail trimmer is very awkward to work with on tiny paws and nails.

Small Dogs’ Nails Can Still be Hard

Tiny dog nails can sometimes be surprisingly hard, so scissors and clippers should be of a good construction even if they are of a small size.

A tip for hard little dog nails is to trim them after a bath. Alternatively, soak your dogs feet in water for fifteen minutes or wrap them in a wet cloth before clipping.

Grinding Small Dog Nails

With grinders you need to ensure you use only the lower speed. You should also start off with fine-grade sanding bands before trying a coarser grit. An electric dog nail grinder at high speed can reduce a tiny dog nail much faster than you would think, so be very careful until you know how it works.

Avoid Cutting into the Nail Quick

As always when trimming dogs’ nails you need to locate the quick and avoid cutting into it. Keeping styptic powder within easy reach is always a good idea.

And remember trimming a little and often is the best way to avoid the nail and the quick growing too long.

Using a Dog Nail File

An advantage with tiny dog nails is that they can feasibly be trimmed with a dog nail file. Normally a dog nail file would make trimming dogs’ nails rather too lengthy. On small dogs it is not only possible, but provides a safe and economical way of trimming your little dog’s nails. Make sure to file in one direction only, not backwards and forwards, and to file away from your dog rather than towards him.

If trimming with clippers or scissors, you will also need a dog nail file to trim of any rough edges.

Try Out a Table-Top Grooming Table

A practical solution when trimming the nails on small dog is to use a table-top grooming table. It will bring the dog up to a height that is easier on you back than if you trim the nails with the dog in your lap. It will also provide you with an extra pair of hands if needed. Alternatively, you can use a grooming arm that can be attached to any table.
